Many health care providers get a bad taste in their mouth when you mention direct mail marketing. They routinely flinch and think of response rates at or below 1%, rates dropping lower and lower.
There are many reasons why direct mail has such a bad reputation. Here are my three favorite.

What Is Direct Mail Advertising?
Direct mail advertising is when you send out mailings with your company name and information about your business to prospective customers. You may choose to send out postcards, letters, advertisements, sales flyers and catalogs along with other types of mailings. These things will make an impression on potential clients that are interested in your business. This will let the clients know what you are offering at your place of business and the products and services that they can expect to receive. You may reach less people by using direct mail advertising than if you were to go through traditional marketing methods. But your monies are focused mainly on certain businesses, demographics and customers which makes this type of advertising work very well. Most direct mail companies offer list rentals. These rentals have a wealth of data to help you find the right addresses to target with your mailing.

Direct Mail: A Brief Introduction
Direct Mail marketing can be defined as “marketing through a channel that reaches the consumer directly”. The channel is usually through a mailer. Direct mail marketing is also known as “Direct Response Marketing” but there are those who refer to this as “Junk Mail”. That is mainly because all of us receive so many direct mails these days that we hardly open any and as a result most of them end up as junk. And so the receiver does not end up taking the desired action that the business wants it to take. In fact these days people are receiving so many direct mails that some companies are offering them an option to opt out of receiving the mailers.

Take crossing the road for instance. Do you remember those green cross code adverts? These adverts told you how to safely cross the road. After people learned how to cross the road safely, accident rates dropped through the floor. This is because education reduces risk. Not completely mind. But then to win without risk is to win without glory. You couldn’t win if you couldn’t lose, could you?
So a certain amount of risk is healthy and it adds to the fun of things. But stick a blindfold on before you cross the road and then it’s not so funny, right?
If you’re willing to actually do a tiny bit of work on your direct mail business then you’re well on your way to becoming a master. All that’s needed to succeed are the secrets, a little intestinal fortitude and keeping your finger on the pulse.

A Direct Mail Marketing campaign is perfect for attracting new customers, and for keeping existing clients coming back for more. When you address each individual client directly, you will be able to capture their attention, and pitch your ideas and offerings more effectively.
Where To Begin
Direct mail marketing starts with a mailing list. The more information that is availabe, the more personalized you can make your campaign. If you know the last product a specific client purchased, you can offer them a similar item, at a discounted cost, similar to the way Amazon.com recommends purchases. All information from the mailing list is processed and then automatically inputted onto a design template for each and every name and address on the list.
